Baseball culture

Called the national pastime, baseball also records tensions among migration, segregation, integration, local loyalty, and family memory.

01 · PASTIME

A slower rhythm

A 162-game regular season makes baseball less a single spectacle than a background rhythm through warmer months. Radio, scorecards, statistics, food, and local teams turn repetition into habit and inheritance.

02 · IDENTITY

Whose America?

The “all-American game” was never automatically equal. Negro Leagues built spaces under exclusion; integration did not erase barriers. Latino players and communities connect baseball to migration, language, and transnational identity.

03 · RITUAL

Ballpark ritual

Opening Day signals spring; the seventh-inning stretch, foul-ball gloves, hot dogs, and peanuts form familiar ritual, while each park keeps local food, songs, and architecture. October turns the long season into a national story.

04 · LANGUAGE

Everyday language

ballpark figure 是大概数字,step up to the plate 是承担责任,out of left field 是出人意料,three strikes 则常被借作规则隐喻。

Ballpark figure, step up to the plate, out of left field, and three strikes show how baseball entered everyday speech. Team marks, uniforms, and historic imagery still involve rights.
