U.S. history & culture

From colonies to platform life.

Land, colonization & slavery

North America already held many Indigenous societies. European colonization, land seizure, religious communities, Atlantic trade, and slavery formed the early order. Who held land, labor, and freedom was a cultural question from the start.

Nation-building, expansion & contradiction

The new republic expanded westward as market growth and slavery expanded in parallel. The language of liberty conflicted with Indigenous removal, enslavement, and women’s exclusion from political rights.

Cultural entry: founding myths, frontier stories, abolitionist print and speeches, and Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852).

Industry, cities & mass entertainment

Railways, factories, immigration, and urbanization concentrated production, housing, and consumption while bringing labor conflict, segregation, and inequality. Cities became new spaces for language, music, performance, news, and retail.

The Depression ruptured work and household security; the New Deal enlarged the federal role in relief, employment, and social insurance. World War II then brought industrial mobilization, women’s factory work, and migration toward defense coasts.

Rights movements, fragmented media & local scenes

Vietnam, deindustrialization, energy shocks, urban fiscal pressure, and rights movements altered family, work, and local belonging. Cable, cassettes, arcades, malls, and MTV split shared culture by channel, city, and scene.

Children’s works cross borders too

U.S. postwar early readers and Canadian picture books and animation can meet on one generation’s shelf or screen, yet their creators, publishing systems, languages, channels, and routes into home life differ. First ask where a work came from and how it entered whose life.

Platforms, pandemic & reordered visibility

Smartphones, social media, streaming, platform labor, housing pressure, pandemic disruption, and regional migration reordered work, care, friendship, and public expression. Platforms are not just entertainment channels; they are infrastructure for visibility, conflict, commerce, and memory.
