Modern U.S. college football usually treats the 1869 Rutgers–Princeton game as its beginning. Early rules remained closer to association and rugby football before colleges developed a distinct system. Serious 1905 injuries and deaths led President Theodore Roosevelt to press reform; the organization formed the next year became the NCAA.
Its core is not simply students playing. Colleges long carried local-representation functions often held by professional clubs elsewhere. Team names, colors, mascots, fight songs, alumni, and family generations let a team stand for a school, a college town, and sometimes a state.

College Football Playoff 取代单纯由碗赛与投票决定冠军的旧结构;当前采用 12 队框架。The College Football Playoff replaces a system dominated by bowls and polls; the current framework uses a 12-team bracket.
Across the South and parts of the Midwest, towns or states without major professional teams may invest more local identity in college teams. In metros with multiple pro franchises, college play can still matter, but attention is structured differently. Texas links high school, college, and professional football into a continuum. The Northeast holds the earliest history without necessarily holding the strongest everyday dominance today.
Do not ask which team “Americans” support. Ask state, city, school, conference, and family alumni ties. Supporters of Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, Notre Dame, or a small college enter different traditions.

Dress & visual identity
校队有正式比赛队服;球迷更多穿带校名、字母标志、吉祥物和校色的 T 恤、卫衣、帽子与球衣。部分比赛会号召全场统一穿某一种颜色。
Teams have formal uniforms. Fans more often wear school names, lettermarks, mascots, colors, T-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, and jerseys. Some games call for a stadium-wide color.
A tailgate is a pregame gathering around parking lots or campus. Marching bands, fight songs, mascots, entrances, and student sections build the scene. Homecoming joins a game to alumni return.
Barbecue, chili, wings, dips, beer, and regional dishes often appear at tailgates or watch parties, but there is no national menu. Thanksgiving turkey belongs to the holiday table; it may coincide with games without becoming standard college-football food.
