Soccer culture

U.S. soccer did not appear overnight: schools, immigrant communities, women’s soccer, professional leagues, and global tournaments built its audience.

01 · PATH

The U.S. path

U.S. Soccer formed in 1913, while professional leagues rose and fell. The 1994 men’s World Cup helped lead to MLS in 1996. Soccer grew through cities, youth play, and international competition beside established sports calendars.

02 · WOMEN

Women’s soccer

The USWNT’s World Cup and Olympic record made it one of the strongest national identities in U.S. soccer. School and college pathways tie the sport to girls’ participation, equality, and pay debates.

03 · COMMUNITY

Communities & cities

Immigrants from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and Asia bring club loyalty and national-team memory. MLS, NWSL, lower leagues, bars, and youth weekends create overlapping audiences.

04 · 2026

World Cup year

The 2026 World Cup connects host cities, national teams, diasporas, travel, and brands. Content must distinguish soccer from American football and avoid assigning one team to all Latino audiences.
