Where it came from
The modern U.S. comic-book market formed in the 1930s. Superman’s 1938 debut in Action Comics No. 1 is commonly treated as a key beginning of the genre, followed by Batman in 1939 and Wonder Woman in 1941. Depression-era cities, mass media, inexpensive print, and fear of fascism created fertile ground for extraordinary power hidden behind an ordinary identity.
Many early creators came from Jewish immigrant families. Figures such as Superman and Captain America translated persecution, war, immigration, assimilation, outsider status, and the contradictions of becoming American into popular myth.
