DECEMBER 25 · RELIGIOUS + SECULAR

Christmas

For some it marks Jesus’s birth; for many households it is also a season of lights, gifts, music, travel, and childhood memory.

01 · ORIGIN

A Christian feast

Christmas commemorates Jesus’s birth. Church traditions include Advent, Christmas Eve worship, carols, nativity scenes, and Epiphany on January 6, with variation across denominations and immigrant communities. U.S. public culture also includes extensive nonchurch family practice.

02 · AMERICAN FORM

How the U.S. version formed

The familiar package comes from migration and media. German traditions shaped the tree; German American cartoonist Thomas Nast popularized a round, fur-trimmed Santa; nineteenth-century magazines circulated Victorian family-tree imagery. Department stores, advertising, film, radio, and songs later nationalized gifts, snow, hearth, and reunion.

03 · DIFFERENCE

Family and regional difference

Snow imagery does not describe the South, Southwest, or Hawai‘i. Latino Catholic families may foreground Nochebuena, Las Posadas, or Three Kings Day. Some households only exchange gifts and meals; Jewish, Muslim, unaffiliated, and other families may not observe at all.

04 · RITUALS

05 · COMMERCE

Commerce

Christmas commerce begins in November and spans gifts, décor, food, travel, parties, charity, and returns. Sacred imagery, Santa, family structure, and “home for the holidays” are not neutral templates; loneliness, cost, grief, and nonobservance are real. Christmas, holiday season, and winter are not interchangeable.
