01 · HISTORY

From memorial to national holiday

Anna Jarvis held a 1908 West Virginia church memorial for her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis. Newspapers and supporters spread a second-Sunday observance; West Virginia legislated it in 1910, and Congress and President Woodrow Wilson established national Mother’s Day in 1914.

02 · RITUALS

Flowers, cards, and contact

Carnations came from early memorials, later expanding into flowers, cards, brunch, calls, photos, and gifts. Children make school crafts; adult children arrange visits or meals. Mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, adoptive mothers, and other caregivers may be honored.

03 · COMPLEXITY

Not universally happy

Bereavement, infertility, pregnancy loss, estrangement, adoption, queer families, single parents, and unequal care work make the day emotionally complex. Defining a “good mother” only through sacrifice and domestic care excludes real families.

04 · COMMERCE

Commercial tension

Flowers, jewelry, beauty, dining, home goods, and experiences peak. Jarvis later opposed commercial exploitation, a tension that remains: standardized gifts offer convenience but flatten relationships. Segmented, opt-out marketing fits reality better than one universal “thank Mom.”
